We’ve finally reached a point where we could dedicate some proper development time to Linux. While Linux still represents a relatively small part of the Arcane user base, we genuinely believe in the platform and its future, and we want to continue supporting and promoting it.
That said, I’m still a one-man army here. 😅 Maintaining Arcane across Windows, macOS and Linux is already a monumental task, so for Linux we’re primarily targeting Ubuntu. It’s simply not realistic for me to test and maintain every distro and every possible desktop configuration.
🐧 Linux fixes & improvements
This patch addresses a number of issues that have been plaguing the Linux client:
- Major fixes to view rendering
- Infobar rendering fixed
- New setup wizard for Piper TTS
- Several Linux-specific UI and compatibility fixes
- Guilds toast notifications now appear where they’re supposed to
- Bridge zoning fixes for Linux
- And quite a bit more under the hood
🚀 A new rendering system — for everyone
Interestingly, getting Linux into a state I was happy with forced me to rethink parts of Arcane's underlying rendering system.
The implementation we ended up with is actually better than the old one, so Windows and macOS receive the same improved rendering architecture as a byproduct of the Linux work.
Windows users in particular should see a noticeable performance improvement from the new rendering system.
So while this started as a Linux patch, everybody gets something out of it. ❤️
🌉 Bridge & Guilds
Bridge zoning has also been fixed on both Linux and Windows.
Guilds received a Linux-specific fix for the toast system, where notifications could appear in the wrong place—or not where they were expected at all.
We also finally squashed the Guilds multiple-instance bug.
Previously, opening Guilds while it was already running could create additional instances of the application.
Now, if Guilds is already running, launching it again will simply focus the existing instance instead.
Much cleaner. Much saner. 🪄
This release involved a lot of work that isn't necessarily flashy, but it gives us a much stronger foundation across all three platforms.
And yes...
Arcane ❤️ Linux. 🐧✨
